Your idea of a dream date was dinner at Casper & Gambini in Lagos or Chez Victor in Abuja. But that was not meant to be.

We’d try to avoid the stereotype and still have the dream date. So here are some ideas to make your day special. Whether you have a date or you’re flying solo we’ve got your back.

Plan a car picnic – So just in case you are planning on going to your favourite restaurant for a dinner and you get stuck again in traffic. Have a car picnic. Arrange for two wine glasses, a bottle of wine – Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc (just a little wine will do and thank you for not driving drunk), peanuts or almond nuts. If you can, get some pizza.

Plan to walk – When in doubt, leave out. Drop the car. If you can, take a walk to your favourite supermarket or cinema or restaurant. Walking can be romantic especially if you are holding hands and from time to time you stop to look into each other’s eyes. Keep the extreme PDAs down. In these parts, such gestures may be misconstrued.

Do lunch, not dinner – Evenings these days, can be very intense. It’s either one doesn’t get to the venue early because of traffic or the whole place is packed. So make it early. Go to your favourite restaurant or cinema and have a swell time together.

Have a selfie date – Ok. You like taking pictures which you share on social media. But let’s notch it up a bit. While everyone else is tense and worried about having a great time, you and your date are already having a great time – taking pictures. Take yourselves out, all over the place, enter restaurants, go the shopping mall, crash out at hotel lobbies – just taking selfies. And when you are done, go for your real date, which may be anywhere or just at your place.

If you are married, plan a mini-staycation. Check into a swank hotel, get drinks at the hottest new bar, see a show and have fun! But make sure you book well ahead of time.
